Historical Background and Facilities
Harpeth Valley Elementary School was initially constructed in 1939 to serve a rural community situated in the southwest corner of Davidson County. As a result of this outlying location, Harpeth Valley was exempt from the 1972 court-ordered busing mandate and continued to serve children living in the rural Pasquo/Bellevue area of Nashville. We are currently multicultural.
As the expansion of Nashville extended into Bellevue, the burgeoning student population necessitated repeated construction to the existing antiquated structure and the addition of several portables. Faced with these issues, the MNPS school board voted to build another facility on the same site as the existing school. This project was completed in 1996 and a beautiful 78,000 square foot facility was opened in Spring of 1996. Originally designed to host 600 Kindergarten-grade 4 students, the design features a closed loop to facilitate student circulation that encircles a landscaped courtyard. The lovely courtyard is used as an outdoor classroom, a place for nature study, gardening, as well as an area for quiet outdoor socialization. The new facility also houses a Library/Media Center, a gym/indoor playroom, a cafeteria, and a teacher workroom. The Harpeth Valley library offers a book-to-student ration of 24.85 to 1 along with 6 computers designated for student research. Ten portables are located on the Harpeth Valley site due to an increase in student population. Harpeth Valley also has daily access to a Metropolitan Nashville public park. This park is located directly behind Harpeth Valley and is available to all students. |
